Study Finds Hemp Extracts Safe for Long-Term Use

Apr 17th 2024

According to the results of a new study, hemp extracts containing a 2:1 ratio of CBD to THC are associated with improvements in behavioral issues in patients with dementia, with little to no negative side effects even after long-term use.

Researchers from Switzerland analyzed the safety and efficacy of long-term use of cannabis extracts in a group of dementia patients (at the average age of 81 years old). Each participant received an average dose of 12mg THC and 24.8mg CBD per day over the course of 13 months.

The research team saw "marked improvements" in the patients' symptoms throughout the duration of the study. They also reported that patient's had "no problems related to the treatment" and had "limited adverse drug reactions."

The study concludes that "long-term THC/CBD (1:2) medication can be administered safely and with overall positive clinical improvement to poly medicated older adults with severe dementia and associated problems."

These results are similar to the results of a separate placebo-controlled study which saw that sublingual administration of CBD-dominant extracts improved sleep patterns and decreased agitation in dementia patients.
