Man's Bestfriend's Bestfriend: CBD & Pets
Apr 17th 2024
We know how great CBD can be for relieving our anxieties and pains, but did you know that CBD can offer the same kind of relief to our furry friends?
All animals, including vertebrates (mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish) and invertebrates (sea urchins, leeches, mussels, nematodes, and others) have been found to have endocannabinoid systems. This means that they can process and benefit from CBD in the same way that we can!
While there is always more research to be done, studies have shown that CBD can help our pets with a number of ailments including:
Anxiety
The calming effects of CBD can be a huge help to pets who suffer from severe chronic, situational, and separation anxiety. Pets who regularly ingest CBD tend to be calmer, friendlier, and more content in situations that may typically set off an episode.
Joint Pain/Arthritis
CBD can help ease swelling in the joints due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Just like for humans, joint pain and arthritis can be painful and debilitating for our pets. CBD oils and treats have been known to reduce this pain, and can have your older dog acting like a puppy again in no time!
Gut Health/Digestion
For those pets who suffer from gastrointestinal distress, CBD can be a great option! CBD helps ease nausea as well as reduce inflammation in the gut. CBD is generally being looked at for its potential to benefit gut microbiota, as this would correlate to a lower risk of diseases like obesity, irritable bowel disorder, and even colon cancer.
Cardiac Benefits
Cannabinoids like CBD have been known to induce vasorelaxation (the reduction of vascular tension). Anandamide, for example, has been shown to cause vasorelaxation in a number of different studies. Other research suggests that CBD and the endocannabinoid system play a role in mediating heart attacks, reducing the risk of heart failure, and may even work as a cardio-protectant!
Dry Skin/Irritations
CBD can be administered to pets topically as well! Just like how CBD can help people with minor burns, itches, and skin irritants, CBD can help animals with skin irritants, dry patches, and hot spots! Be aware of which topicals you apply, as your pet is likely to try and lick that spot. Luckily, our Colorado Cures unscented Salves are a great option for soothing your pets skin, as it is safe to ingest in small amounts.
