CBD Deemed Safe for Mainstream Retail in Recent Canadian Study
Apr 17th 2024
According to a study conducted by Canadian health advisory panel, Health Canada, CBD has been deemed "safe and tolerable" for adults, and is recommended for purchase without a prescription.
Back in 2019, Health Canada appointed a team of researchers and experts to evaluate the safety of CBD and whether or not it should be available for sales in mainstream retailers like Walmart, or if it should be limited to adult-use cannabis retailers and/or by doctor recommendation.
The nine-member panel, known as the Science Advisory Committee on Health Products Containing Cannabis, explains that the results of their study suggest that CBD is "safe and tolerable for short-term use (a maximum of 30 days) at doses from 20 milligrams per day to a maximum dose of 200 mg/day."
Based on these findings, Health Canada - an agency similar to the US's FDA - will make a decision as to whether CBD should be sold in grocery stores, convenience stores, or other standard retail outlets.
The researchers panel recommended that should CBD be legal for sale in any retail establishment, then these products:
- Should be purchased only after consulting with a doctor, especially if the consumer is on other medications;
- Should contain statements on potential interactions between CBD and other medications and/or alcohol;
- Must feature "prominently placed" warnings that deter those who are pregnant, nursing, or those with sensitive allergies to cannabis from using the products;
- And should contain dosing instructions and information on potential side effects, especially at higher doses.
Although CBD has been legal and sold outside of dispensaries in the US, the Food and Drug Administration has yet to conduct any studies to confirm or deny the safety of the cannabinoid. This new research may potentially push the FDA to conduct their own studies on CBD and its efficacy and safety.
